One evening my sister and I were walking down the street in the North Davidson neighborhood of Charlotte, NC and we walked by a new boutique called Vivian B. As we walked in, we were greeted with the warmest reception ever! Kimberly Wilkinson, Johnson C Smith University alum and owner of Vivian B, is an amazing personality with an eye for fashion that is exquisite. She has very dynamic pieces that I feel any girl can appreciate. If you are in the Charlotte area be sure to check it out!
Queenate: What was your inspiration behind opening a women’s boutique?
Kimberly: I live in NODA. I used to sit outside of my home and “people watch” when I noticed that oftentimes there were so many people standing around outside of the restaurants with nothing to do. I thought that this area needed something more. I started thinking “there really is no retail clothing shopping in this neighborhood,” and I wanted to add something to the community that I thought people would want. I felt that it was a venture that would do well here, so I got on it!
Queenate: Do you have a background in fashion?
Kimberly: I went to the fashion institute for a year and I studied fashion marketing. I ultimately obtained my degree in business marketing from Johnson C Smith University. I feel like in life you should do what you enjoy and try to make a living doing it. I personally have always enjoyed shopping so I knew that I eventually wanted to open up my own boutique. I used to spend a lot of money with other people but now, I just shop Vivian B!
Queenate: Are you a native of Charlotte?
Kimberly: I am originally from East Chicago, Indiana. I went to high school in Indianapolis and I relocated to Charlotte from there and have been in this city for almost 6 years now. I moved here to further my education and I stayed because Charlotte is a city that is growing. I feel like it is a city where I can successfully make my mark!
Queenate: Why did you name your boutique Vivian B?
Kimberly: Vivian Bozonier is the name of my grandmother who is still living. She is such a diva! Her wardrobe is very large and it is truly a vintage shop in itself! My little sister rummages through her closet and finds hot stuff all the time! Originally I thought about naming it something along the lines of “grandma’s closet” but Vivian B just sounded so classy, chic, and it is a name that really embodied what I was going for.
Queenate: What demographic of women does your boutique cater to?
Kimberly: I currently cater to women 19-42. Thusfar is has stayed true to that demographic but I think that women younger and older will have no problem finding something that they can enjoy. We have items that scream “fun times, let’s party” as well as classic staple pieces that every woman should have and can feel comfortable in.
Queenate: What designers or lines do you carry in Vivian B?
Kimberly: We carry BCBG, Dolce Vita, Division E slouchy cotton T-Shirts (which you will find on celebrities such as Halle Berry and Miley Cyrus), Ali Ro (known for there dresses because of there lines and the cuts of fabric), Double Zero, and Custo Barcelona which is very artistic and definitely matches the feel of what is going on here in NODA. We have so much more coming soon in March. Our spring collection will definitely be really nice!
Queenate: What do you think sets Vivian B apart?
Kimberly: It’s an experience that we can share together. We serve wine, and I am all about helping the customer find something great. Shoppers can expect to find different pieces that they will not see everywhere else.
Queenate: What is the best way to contact you?
Kimberly: You can follow me on twitter @Vivianbboutique or email me at KimberlyW@shopvivianb.com. Visit the website at www.shopvivianb.com!
